Three things
"Hardware upgrades are not cheap either. I know some companies that will either stick to XP till EOL (End of Life) or move to Ubuntu. Windows 7 on existing machines does not give you the slick Aero interface, it looks exactly like Ubuntu which is free."

1) While hardware is not cheap, you need to look at it with a corporate perspective. A single employee will cost upwards of $40,000 a year = $200,000 over the next 5 years (5 year being rough estimate of machine life time). At <$1000 a machine, thats 200 machines for the price of a single employee. Not insignificant, but not nearly as important as you make it sound.

2) Your statement is anecdotal at best. For every company you say will move to Ubuntu, I'm sure there is at least one that will upgrade to new Windows (I'm guessing its actually more like 5 or 10 to 1)

3) Businesses couldn't care less about the GUI - they care about interface with existing apps. New apps for new OS = huge retraining costs for all employees relying on said apps. (assuming of course these are non-standard consumer apps)

4) All the issues you have with 7 have been rectified with later builds. I'm guessing you are still on build 7100 at best. Latest available is 7227. By RTM, issues are gone. My 9 year old printer is still working like a champ (funny thing about it: its actually cheaper for me to replace the printer then it would to replace the ink cartridge because its so old)
