I find it very curious how so many expect
computers to be so universally
interchangeable/compatible, but rarely demand
such interoperability in other products.

Why don't cars all have easy to combine
compatible parts and systems? I use cars as an
analogy because our culture has reached the
point where nearly all of us need a computer to
live our lifestyles, just like cars reached
that point back in the day. And I feel like
it's safe to say the format and general
operations of a car are "open source" for any
and all to adapt as they see fit.

Could you imagine being able to build a BMW for
the price of a Honda? OK maybe the body would
be a different design, but all the machinery
and features of a BMW should be easily crammed
into a Civic...and sold for 15k. I mean, why
should I pay 30+ grand for a car that drives
the same roads with 4 wheels and headlights
just because it's made by Bavarians? I can't
even do the maintenance by myself!

And I can guarantee you BMW would not be happy
if someone started a company making cars
with BMW parts and selling them for less than
half price.

So unless someone wants to tell me why the
computer industry should be held at a different
type of business model...leave Apple alone.
