What's the problem? Authors still have control.
If another online service decides to start offering authors a better deal than Google, ANY author can opt out of the Google deal and switch to that service. There are no chains attached to their ankles. Right now, Google is the only one doing it, so it makes sense to get this concept started by allowing them to create this resource. Authors get something for work which is generating zero income. More people get to view their works. It seems like a win for everyone concerned to me.
