I said "they should be allowed to"
I'm not in favor of an outright ban on alcohol (particalarly a nationwide one) because it's too hard to enforce, but states should have the privilege of making their own decisions on the matter (as they currently do) with local voters and politicians taking responsibility for the consequences, bad or good. If one doesn't like the local liquor laws, he can move somewhere else (or lobby for changes), but it's very hard to argue with a straight face that someone's human rights are violated because he is deprived of intoxicants.

As far as "facts" go, you can do your own research, but I faced enough under-the-influence idiots (or ones that wanted to be) in my days as a convenience store clerk to be convinced that the percentage of the population whose personality is improved by consumption of alcohol is 0.

So my position is that alcohol should be taxed and regulated, but it's probably a bad idea to ban it outright.
