I noticed in the Personal Menu screenshot, full size icons were being used. If you want to save space, the first thing to do is select the small icon option in the toolbar "Customize" dialog. Saves quite a bit of space, especially since the adoption of the oversize Back button in the current default theme. I use a compact theme, and small icons.
Lots of other extensions for this purpose, too - I'd be inclined to go with something more proven.
