I tell my children the secret to keeping your job is to "make your boss's life easier". Making him/her look good is ok, but in the end, if they have less stress because of you, you will be valued. Valued = keep job, higher pay, more perks, etc. Do what they need done without being asked. Study their job, and make it easier for them to do.
