Only one "road" to popular flying...
can only be automated flight. The giant bureaucracy in Washington DC will never allow popular flight until the vehicles become fully automated and reliable.

Full auto flight is already been used by commercial aviation industry for years and has an unbelievably fantastic track record for safety. Even the Navy is thinking of incorporating it into manned and unmanned landing on aircraft carriers.

All the services use UAVs that have an undeniable track record for being able to return to base without any remote pilot intervention whatsoever.

Aircraft in this category would also realize a considerable savings in fuel, I would wager; as private pilots I know, already enjoy tremendous fuel savings per destination compared to driving there. This in the small aircraft catagory, of course.

Large cities are building furiously to keep up with the inner city traffic demands, and even triple decker highways can't keep up with the demand. Flying on automated flight paths run by a computer organized flight controller system could end the sensless building of ever more expensive multi-trestle road ways. Plus answer a lot of energy consernes as well.

The Army has successfully conducted hydrogen powered drone UAVs that are as large as a manned aircraft that carry the same amount of payload and are run on hydrogen fuel cells!

I don't think we will ever see this idea die. It will actually become ever more imperative for the future!
