Investors are idiots. So are analysts.
Microsoft continues to be very profitable despite a very serious recession. Their decrease in profits aren't a result of bad business decisions but rather the economy as a whole.

Investors need to realize that profits will continue to be under pressure until the economy turns around. They need to stop looking at the short term and more at the long term. It was short term thinking that got the economy into the mess it is in today.

Announcing 5,000 layoffs and completing on 1,400 has just placed almost every employee at MS into a holding pattern on discretionary spending. This means that not only did they take 5,000 people out of the economy but rather their entire workforce as they wait for the remaining 3,600 to be completed. Which were were told is going to take over a year. Get the cuts over with so the remaining staff can get on with their lives. Nothing kills moral like having layoffs hanging over your head.
