Motorola debacle
This is a classic case in Project Management courses. The idea is cellular-like service, but with universal coverage. It became a pet of Motorola's president, so nobody could kill it. Cost of satellites, launch vehicles, etc made air time charges unrealistic. Eventually, Motorola sold the whole thing off to a newly-formed company for cents on the dollar - wouldn't be surprised if Motorola pres among the investors. I haven't followed the story since. Question is, can they afford the replacement satellites, or will the entire system just wind down.
