RE: Macs rule; PCs drool
I'm a Mac afficianado like a rutabaga in a vegetable
garden: a useful addition, but no tomato. I totally love the
Mac, but I can't ignore the fact that Microsoft owns the biz
desktop.

I accept that MS owns email, and thus I have a hosted
Exchange account. As a result I can painlessly sync my
iphone with my contacts, cal, and email, and actually
participate with my client's cal and contact sharing.

I use an SQL Server database (also via a hosting service).
Can I code in mySQL and Postgres? Sure, but the vast
majority of _business_ applications (not LAMP stuff, but
actual line-of-business database apps) require SQLServer.
And they don't run on Macs, either, so while my Mac is a
great Windows client, I am dependent on Microsoft server
facilities.

As a network technologist, I find the Mac an unbeatable
desktop platform -- even the notebook versions. But I
empathize with my clients who, for perfectly legitimate
business reasons -- many or them legal requirements --
need to be able to push policies and updates out to their
desktop population. Macs don't work in that environment,
leaving Macs the odd rutabaga out when checking off
SarBox audit items.

Will Macs ever be a huge fraction of the PC market? That's
like asking if Mercedes Benz (another 10% marketshare
holder) will ever own the domestic automobile market.
They won't, but they don't have to. You can be big, or you
can be good. I can't think of an industry where anybody is
both.
