Well, actually...
Saying "just the pilot" is probably a vast oversimplification in this case. This seems to be a real stick-and-rudder craft with no fly-by-wire or software between the pilot and the surfaces. And... if you play with MS Flight Simulator or other such, you'll find that flying a B-777 or Cessna 172 vs flying a high performance fighter are two complete difference experiences. (And this is in the atmosphere.) Furthermore, flying at 10,000 ft and 50,000 ft are two complete difference experiences as well. There are lots of interesting ways to screw up.

But... Paul Allen does deserve credit for putting his money behind this and other space-related ventures (e.g., SETI Allen Telescope Array) when there is no reason to expect a sensible monetary return. He apparantly understands the long-range importance of these types of ventures.
