It's true, sometimes lower cost is the motivation. Often, it's quality of work and attitude. You're also right on the "treat them like slaves" aspect, but that's certainly a small minority of the cases. Of course, horrror stories abound out there, just like airline disaster stories dominate the headlines. Tho we both know MOST airliners don't crash.

Even if cost were the only reason (which it isn't), that's not necessarily a bad thing. That's how things are supposed to be. That's the American way. This is the essence of captitalism. One can't have it both way and only make special exceptions for oneself!
