Are you a Luddite?
I suppose that Leif Ericcson's voyage to North America was a stupid, unnecessary risk.

Christopher Columbus's first trip to the West Indies was a stupid, unnecessary (and expensive!) risk.

Charles Lindbergh's solo crossing of the Atlantic was a stupid, unnecessary risk.

Thor Heyerdahl's Kon-tiki voyage was a stupid, unnecessary risk.

The first atomic bomb was a stupid, unnecessary risk.

The Apollo moonshots were stupid, unnecessary risks.

Bill Gates co-creation and takeover of Microsoft was stupid and unnecessary.

Nope. I don't buy any of your "stupid, unnecessary" argument. Most people who label first steps as stupid and unnecessary are the same people who think living is being well-fed and living in a warm, comfortable house their whole lives and never venture farther than the borders of their home town; as well as thinking the world ends at their town border.

While I'm not an adrenaline junkie, a certain amount of risk, even for nebulous returns, makes life interesting enough to keep living. And nothing ever improved without taking at least some risk.
