Seriously... Do you think things all the way through?
A trial version of Office is just that - a trial version. It will work for 60 days from the time you first fire it up. After 60 days, it will prompt you to BUY a product key and won't allow you to use Office programs any further until you do.

Given the trial copies of Office are included only on those systems shipped with Windows, it seems kinda odd that Microsoft would take money for the copies of Windows being sold to the OEM, and yet, pay the OEM to install a trial version of Office. That makes little to no sense. A more likely scenario - Microsoft gives the trialware version of Office away for free. OEMs include it quite gladly and willingly with the idea that if the buyer of said hardware tries it - and likes it - they will be inclined to buy the product and as such, they're likely to get a piece of the sale. Everybody wins. The customer's happy. The OEM's are happy and Microsoft's happy.

Your scenario only works IF Microsoft paid the OEM significantly more than the cost of Windows to make the Windows verion of the hardware cheaper than the Linux version. And I just don't see that happening.

Microsoft is NOT in the habit of paying people to put Windows on an OEM's hardware. Microsoft is in the habit of getting paid for their software.

Exactly how would you have a trial version of OpenOffice - given it's a free product?
