Various reasons to improve software!
Let's just say, this has to be the #1 reason for Microsoft to keep improving their software.

Pay per utilization? Obviously, this part of the patent is to really get the MS developers to scrutinize all CPU and memory usage. Those developers sure can work miracles when given the chance, and this is exactly the kind of performance metric that can rally a group.

We have also seen how Microsoft Internet Explorer 7, in combination with Areo, has become lean and mean, allowing near instant web page viewing, with few noticeable effects towards the user's total experience. Just imagine what version 8 will be like!

Now, to tell the truth, we can also see how well this model will work with the Xbox 360, as this high end application interface will be much more affordable and widespread, once it is nearly free (per minute charge applies).

Others, such as IBM, have tried to succeed at a type of, but completely different model because:
1) they did not succeed (who still uses an IBM 360? Xbox 360 has it beat to no end).
2) they used mainframes based on proprietary operation systems, so obviously a commodity PC based on open Microsoft software model (see OOXML) is completely different.
