Refill SKUs for teh win
I moved from Buffalo "If I recycle my cans curbside
they don't give me a nickle like they do at the
grocery store so I throw cans out," New York to
Bellingham "We don't put flouride in our water because
cavities are natural," Washington.

There is a lot of eco-hype here in Bellingham, but the
biggest differences are the grocery store refill
stations for shampoo, cleaners, even vinegar! You get
the same Brand name product, but it costs much less
per ounce. You get to re-use your old bottle, so it's
the same packaging, and it's kind of fun to use the
giant dispensers.

And if you forget your old packaging, you can still by
the original product in its petrol based packaging,
stocked next to the bulk dispensers. ...But the giant
jugs in many stores, and people using them, creates a
normative of re-use while still allowing brand
loyalty. I think re-use of packaging for a discount is
a great way to go green without significantly altering
a brand and the fact that the presence of the bulk
containers in the store creates a normative of re-use
is enormous, considering how hard it is to get people
to like change.
