Yes and no
Yes, 2001 was the first year of the new millennium, but the problem was with the date field for the year 2000. "Y2K" is an accurate name for the bug, "millennium" is not.

Never mind that the year 2000 was "current" in computer systems both before and after the calendar year 2000, depending on the fiscal or other style of year used by a given organization.
