- RE: Full encryption stops Amazon Web video leak: Adobe
-
Why do you say "The problem calls into question the viability of renting videos online and possibly exposes online video content to the rampant piracy that plagued the music industry during the Napster era."?
Amazon did not encrypt the stream, as they were advised to. You cannot use the software mentioned in the story to cache the stream any longer.
I would not consider bad security practice on Amazon's part anything near the "Napster" era.
Apples and Oranges.
Besides, everyone knows you need a MEDIUM of transferring these cached .flv movies to even consider a "Napster era problem".
Considering anyone can copy a DVD (rented in any medium/online (screen scrape) DVD rip/Divx) to KEEP the movie. It is the act of freely SHARING these files that becomes a "problem".
This story is just fluff, or an example of the Reuters writers misunderstanding/inexperience with the facts. Torrents created to pirate movies, and any other illegal content is a problem not even mentioned in the story. This would be ONE medium...and without that medium in the story; you have no basis to claim rampant piracy.
As the story mentions only recording these cached files; this is NOT the problem. That isn't NAPSTER by any means. The story is missing the most important part of the puzzle to even consider "rampant piracy"; FREE TRANSPORTATION to any individual. The act of RENTING(by any medium) and copying for oneself still provides a modicum of profit for the publisher. Freely downloading (which DOES occur, and IS relevant to the stories main theme) is not even mentioned.
Editors don't seem to edit any longer. The story is missing a vital piece to make any logical comparison, and thus an illogical leap is made that ANY informed individual would find ludicrous.
The writer, and Reuters Editors seem to be out of touch with what is actually going on, or simply puffed a piece to make it more interesting.
regardless, it misses the mark in its claims by miles/kilometers. - Posted by: profsmichael@... Posted on: 10/02/08 You are currently: a Guest | Members login | Terms of Use
