Ran them all out of our shop
And hired local. The outsource providers were always pushing .NET. Whatever problem we had, that was their solution. So all of them and the Windows-only staff got the heave-ho. I was able to back-fill with local PHP and FOSS talent at competitive rates.

Now we're coding rings around .NET developers. Better product, fast, robust and secure. And when we need capacity we can scale for the cost of hardware.

We have one outsource contractor left that I'm really looking forward to firing. They're nice enough but the language barrier is a constant challenge and they're always coming back to .NET. Even for demos they keep trying to use GoToMyPc which doesn't support Linux. Really chaps my undies. And they never seem to catch on. "Let me run a quick demo for you. Just go to www.gotomypc.com..." Duuuuuh.

The bottom line is a well run FOSS shop can kick MSFT's a**. This gig was unique in some ways but not that different. Our success can be duplicated almost anywhere.

And in less than three weeks I get to fire that last freaking outsource provider. Then we'll be all FOSS (at least on the server and dev side), all American, and no stinking .NET!
