Part of the reason for the "dumbing down"
Because for years...no, decades, our society has rewarded athletes and mostly ignored the academically advanced. It's only in recent years that some schools have started offering a letter jacket for academics. Athletes have been getting this recognition since at least the 50's. In high school athletes are quite often referred to as "jocks", while the smart kids are labeled "nerds" or "geeks". What peer group do you think the average high school kid would rather be in?
