RE: Large Hadron Collider powers up
Trying to find the theoretical "God particle" sounds like an awful waste of billions of dollars. In effect they are trying to recreate the conditions which exist inside an object such as a supernova, conditions which need 8 solar masses or more to exist in nature; so there is no chance of recreating artificially on Earth the gravitation or temperature or pressure needed. To presume to be able to recreate artificially the properties of an object with even greater gravity and mass, such as existed at the Big Bang, would be arrogant folly. Professor Stephen Hawking, the leading expert on theoretical physics, has bet $110 that it can't be done; and I tend to side with him. There is no realistic chance of the CERN experiment producing a "Little Bang" to mimic the Big Bang, and absolutely zero chance of anything dangerous happening. But even if some halfwit accidentally converted all the mass of this planet into energy, it wouldn't amount to a fraction of one solar mass: you couldn't even ignite a Type Ia Supernova with such a piddling explosion. So all the energy in the world will be insufficient to replicate the conditons in the Big Bang. The so-called Higgs Boson looks set to remain a purely theoretical particle.
