Java is NOT a proprietary platform anymore
OpenJDK is open sourced AND pass all Java compatibility tests. And saying that all innovation in Java is tightly controlled by Sun is not true. There's were always very heated discussions about any proposed evolutions in the platform, plus now people can patch the core platform to test their proposals, and they do it !!!

And Javascript is not a RIA language at all. It's one thing to have decent speed for JS, but it's another to develop user-interface stuff with this language. You need huge third-parties libraries to be able to do that without a LOT of effort, and these are VERY limited compared to Flash, Silverlight, Java, JavaFX, etc...
