... but I think the fact that this is open source will
defuse that problem.

One would think that opening up the source code is an
open invitation to find ways to subvert the browser
and gain elevated rights, or to hammer malware through
to the system. However, unlike closed source, when
someone discovers such vulnerabilities, they don't
have to keep the fix in house while the company
bureaucrats decide if the 'bug' worthy of a patch (or
if it's even a bug!) Instead they can release the bug
and any 'fix' they've managed to work out to
world+dog, and within a very short amount of time, the
hole has been plugged.

The analogy is of a dike with a hole in it. Either
you can call for a "Designated Hole Repairman" who may
or may not respond right away, or you and your
neighbors can grab sandbags and start to fix the
problem, all while keeping the pros advised of what
works and what doesn't.
