RE: Five reasons Chrome will take over the world
Actually, I've watched Google from the beginning while I was studying for a degree in HCI and I'm very skeptical of their ability to do this right. Their search engine was an only half-conscious (judging by what has come since) stroke of genius and the founders were well positioned (who they were and where they were) to ride initial success into mammoth success, but their company culture is very programmer-centric and I don't think they ultimately understand why the search engine worked as well as it did. They're basically programmers who met with early success and think that letting more versions of themselves play in more versions of the computer lab where the search engine was born will eventually replicate the formula. So, what they produce are kick-ass from a programming perspective, but tend to be the sorts of things that programmers value, not what end-users value. As a company, they can afford to be wrong, but it will probably mean they don't repeat the magic. They can just keep buying it.
