RE: Large Hadron Collider aces pre-launch testing
It is interesting to see the fear some people have about this LHC subject. Indeed some of the physicists working on the first atom bomb were very concerned about a run-away chain reaction and they did not know for certain whether it would produce a "doomsday machine." Einstein weighed in and considered that if the equivalence equation were correct, relativity would regulate the mass to energy balance. If it didn't do this, in a general example, the sun's gravity would cause it to collapse on itself. But the strong nuclear force counters the sun's gravity. Beam splitting is not the same process as nuclear fusion. Fusion requires a great deal of matter compared to a particle beam. The total particle mass of the beams in the LHC are nano-grams. The amount of black hole energy generated (if at all) could not overcome the mass of the earth.
