WhyFlash or Silverlight? Why not a plain browser?
Personally, I can generate graphics very properly with SVG, and modify the plots with Javascript - and then use XmlHttpRequest to download updated data from the server without a reload.

In short, pretty much all of what the article asks for (minus video, which requires a patented codec) can already be done with a browser with no plugin (except IE, which still doesn't support SVG natively). Damn, next version of Firefox will be able to do real time picture editing in Javascript!

The very fact that you need a plugin for Flash and Silverlight is a failing of this technology: you'd need Flash or Silverlight on all your netbooks, on your cell phones, on your GPS... Not so with a honest to goodness web browser (pick one: Firefox, Opera, Webkit/Safari).
