RE: Olympics set the stage for Web tech fight
I'm not sure how clear cut Silverlight's success is if Microsoft don't ensure it is widely compatible and well supported across different platforms.

My opinion is that both Silverlight and Flash should be used as a last resort when well written, cross-platform AJAX and CSS can't do the job. Browsers are starting to become a fuzzy concept. Questions like what device type, what size screen, what sort of interface, what performance, what resources, what security etc. all influence web app design and new technologies shouldn't assume too many answers if they want to succeed because the diversity isn?t slowing down.

Microsoft has been losing dominance in the browser and OS markets recently - Mac, Linux, Google, Firefox, Symbian, Android for example all represent a growing, collective threat to Microsoft's dominance. If Microsoft genuinely want to build a better Flash and are willing to build for multiple platforms/browsers (properly) for both users and developers, I think it?ll do very well. If however, they decide to try and use Silverlight to strengthen their dominance by 'strongly encouraging' people to use their software I think they'll run into strong competition from Flash, which is already widely supported across different platforms ? especially if Adobe decide to add features and functionality and tune Flash developer tools to compete with Silverlight (I?m predicting they will).
