What you've done in the past has no bearing on what you do today. Torvalds can't know everyone working on this stuff (and their respective skill sets) personally, so getting on the social radar is a perceived useful shortcut. Based on past performance, he might think that he can tell something about how an individual is going to do today.

Of course stock traders and sports bettors can tell you this is often a losing strategy. A person with a great idea today may have a lousy idea tomorrow. A person who has had 5000 great small ideas, might never have a 1 great big idea.

Nobody should get a free ride based on old ideas. Conversely, nobody's idea should be dismissed simply because you've never heard one of their ideas before.

So, like I said, each idea should be judged on its individual merit. Nobody "should just run with it."

I agree that they are doing a fine job. As I said repeatedly, their methods are effective and yield a great kernel. My only point was that their methods are neither free nor open.
