I think that this would be a great addition to Mozilla. I would suggest that the plugin be customizable to link in to any of the commonly used messaging programs, like Yahoo messenger. This functionality would be similar to the trillian messaging program that can track 4 different messaging programs (AIM, ICQ, YM, and MSN)
