RE: Google opens Knol website, a wiki with bylines
I use Wikipedia many times per day. Flawed, as it might be, I prefer its one-page-per-topic model. As for busy professional contributors/monitors, those who have time to monitor do and those who don't---.

Having multiple pages per topic to filter through, even if they are ranked, means that an info-consumer has to spend extra time flipping through several of the top articles to insure that they are getting a well-rounded take on a subject. Wikipedia, on the other hand, is concise and I don't see how bylines help much with vetting of accuracy or completeness, even with ranking. I'm certain that the Knol model will shift to, or at least support as an equal option, the Wikipedia model or die.

What would be a win win for everyone would be if Knol supported both models side-by-side: Allow individual articles on a topic to be submitted and ranked while at the same time maintaining a separate community article to which anyone, even authors of individual articles, can contribute and vet. The community version would show equal strenth with the top-ranked article on a topic in search results. THEN Knol could be a Wikipedia-killer or at least a viable contender.
