Why they talked down the price ...
Great article Esther, but you seem to imply that the "clumsiness" was some sort of accident. Realize, in other IPOs, Wall street et al. already own as much of the stock as they want before the IPO, so they normally want to talk up the price. In this IPO, the tables were turned: the street talked down the price and I'd guess even probably pressured the SEC into nitpicking things so that the publics investors were scared off. Meanwhile, their other hands they were dumping bids on the Dutch auction's blue light $85 special. As a result, the subsequent 27% increase in price (at least right now) is sitting on your mutual funds' books instead of Google's, where it rightfully belongs IMO.
