And, Linux implements lots of standards last time a checked, but more than that, it is becomming a defacto standard,
Exactly, which is why Linux will unify the Unix development domain. No one should be under the illusion, though, (and you obviously aren't) that all aspects of Linux are examples of "international standards."
and the best standards have an open source implementation so there is no funny business. All can use if for free. All can look at the source code.
Well, which is the more useful standard from the standpoint of developers, one that is used by 95% of desktops and 55% of servers, or one that is used by 2% of desktops and 25% of servers? Which is more "standard" if, as you admit, that many of the Linux standards are de facto?
Yes, open source is GREAT. I like access to the source code, and I think Windows needs to work harder at releasing more of the stuff that doesn't really isn't important to them from a competitive positioning standpoint (i.e. Windows kernel code, or other aspects of their API). That doesn't mean, though, that proprietary software isn't valuable.
Proprietary software exists for one reason, and that's to generate revenue. Revenue matters in the world of business. - Posted by: John Carroll Posted on: 10/17/03 You are currently: a Guest | Members login | Terms of Use
