- Which standards?
-
As I discussed in the last installment of my CCIA report series, which standards are you talking about? Furthermore, are those standards broad enough to encapsulate all ways a particular technology can be used? HTML might be a standard, but what about renderer re-use APIs, or simple things that make development for a browser even easier or more flexible?
Simply adhering to a standard doesn't mean that you can drop software on any and all platforms. Besides binary considerations (which might not be an issue if you target Java or .NET), you have implementation differences which make the same "standards-adherent" product perform differently.
Standards are great in core interoperability technology that have been around for long enough to be properly defined (that doesn't apply to cutting edge technology, for which NO standard usually exists). TCP/IP, HTTP and HTML are all great standards to have, but they AREN'T exactly cutting edge technology, which is why we have standards for them in the first place. - Posted by: John Carroll Posted on: 10/17/03 You are currently: a Guest | Members login | Terms of Use
