Investigate for your self
A key point this article makes is that if we all begin to choose products (open-source or not) that are based on open-standards, then other vendors will have to follow. After all, dollars speak louder than words.

Also, take the time and effort to compare solutions- both free and proprietary. We user Oracle but found that it ran faster on Linux than on Win2003server (on identical hardware ofcourse) based on our tests. We also found our Java based middle-tier app also ran better on Linux based on more performance testing. As an added bonus, we've found we spend less time maintianing these machines than we do our windows servers- much better uptimes and no security breaches. Once they are set-up and configured properly, they just keep working with near-zero admin.

This is what companies need to do- don't listen to what consultants/analysts or even folks like me are saying- run rigorous, unbiased performance tests based on real-world usage if possible and decide for yourself what gives you the best "bang-for-the-buck" both in the short-term and long-term.
