Let's keep it simple: we aren't sending bundles of cash to Mars. We're paying people to work to make it happen right here on this planet -- not only scientists but janitors, food service staff, receptionists, and many other jobs that those people you (and I) are concerned about could and do hold. What would you like the government to do -- bring back the CCC and WPA? All of the benefits from space-related research have been lengthily described in another post, but that's the second simple point. I don't know how many lives have been saved by the miniaturization advances alone, but that's a place to start thinking about long-range applications of research and development of technology for our space program.
