- RE: (Photos: Phoenix armed for testing; more landing images)
-
. . . The picture of the descending lander in the few moments it was parachuting, against a telephoto-distant crater background, is indeed remarkable and fortunate!
. . . The eighth image on this page is of a device for sensing wind direction (necessary for knowing direction of dust movement affecting digging and other operations). Although tough enough to have endured the hammering stresses of takeoff and landing, it is sensitive enough to flutter in an atmosphere comparably thin to the Earth's stratosphere. Mars dust is generally finer, lighter, and more electrostatically charged than dust on our planet.
. . . IMHO, Mars will be found to have many cave labyrinths; present and future life, if it is water-based, likely exists sub-surface. Humans 100 years from now will likely be living mainly underground for safety reasons, both on our Moon and on Mars. Would-be entrepreneurs should now be inventing ways to remove dust completely and inexpensively, as it will be a major obstacle to living in those dry areas with lots of static electricity, where it clings to everything. If you don't mind the dust, just hang your laundry out to tumble-dry in the passing Martian dust devils.
