The circled chip is actually the ** CPU **. As I recall, the 2600 used a 6507 clocked at a shade over 1 mHz. Its' internal memory consisted of a mere 4 KILOBYTES (that's 4096 bytes for the uninitiated) of program/data RAM and that was contained in the 24-pin DIP (along with the "boot ROM"). The other 40-pin DIP handled the cartridge I/O, game ports, sound generation and video output to the RF modulator.

For its' time, it was a revolutionary machine! even though the Intellivision was a "technically superior" gaming machine, the 2600 OUTSOLD EVERYTHING because it, unlike the "competition", was SUPER-SIMPLE TO USE.
