Proper Background Research
I wished that this author would have done his homework and do the actual background research before writing an article on it.

The real reason that Java (anyone remember OAK ?) come to be what it is is where it started out as: an OS for a settop box. The whole idea at the time is that it would be an OS that can run on top of various different types of set top boxes from different manufacturers. The idea of Applets are so that they can download 'games' and other form of interactive entertainment to the settop boxes. The security model at the time was invented so that Captain Midnight wouldn't happen again.

By chance that it happened at the same time as the Internet started its populatity and the PC started getting more entertainment based stuff onto it. It was a natural course for SUN to put this onto the PC.
