Name some real improvements...

1) Java garbage collection is suitable for 99.99999% of applications. For the few apps that do need full control of allocating/deallocating memory, you would probably want to be using a more efficient language than Java/.NET anyway. For real time systems, Assembler would be a good choice.
2) In Java, you can also use ANY programming language that can compile to Java bytecodes, such as Python. People could just as easily write Java syntax compilers for C/C++/Perl/etc if there was sufficient motivation to do so.
3) Java is also compiled before being run. DUH! .Net is slightly faster because it is calling native DLLs. The price you pay for this extra speed is platform dependence, and so it's more of a disadvantage really, because now your business is locked into the Microsoft monopoly and they can bully your business around just likle they do everyone else.
