Java's Days are Numbered
Actually the competition between .Net and Java shows the relative advantages of de facto standards over ?committee? standards in markets. MS has been able to establish and advance .Net technologies extremely fast compared to the JCP and Java. The reality of the JCP is that its committee nature undermines its ability to keep up with MS as it is subject to the realities of politics, compromise, and an overall process that is just not as fast when it comes to developing standards or specifications. In fact, the above highlights the quagmire Java is in: if it continues to use the committee approach to standards development, MS will easily continue to widen the technology gap between it and .Net. On the other hand if it tries to use a de facto approach, for all intents and purposes, this would mean Sun (or maybe someone else) becoming the sole primary provider of Java server and other technologies, with everyone else supporting the platform.
