ms has always done a great job of allowing it's applications to connect to other databases, look at mssql and DTS, no other db maker makes it that simple to move data back and forth, and it's thrown in with sql server as a freebee, with ODBC any application from Excel to Word or any third party app can access not only ms db, but ANY db
