Java is too slow, and takes up too much space for the runtime.. to run on a large number of mobile devices, namely some of the older Palm devices (older meaning ~ two years old.. and some of the low end ones even more recently).

Mobile devices really do need to speed that good ol' C (or possibly even assembly) provides.
