not so proprietary
If 2 Unix boxes, a linux cluster and a VMS machine wanted to share a common application, could they use .net and no Microsoft products anywhere?

this is not true anymore with C#. Yes its optimized and built around windows, but .NET can be and is being ported to connect to linux and other databases other than SQL server.

The point is that all this talk about providng sophisticated, RAD development within a powerful and relatively easy mechanism is old news to Microsoft. I give SUN kudos for bringing the concept of java, and network applications to the table, but sadly the Unix community never cared about things like integrated development suites or ease of development. Part of that is due to the fact that its not easy to achieve such a task.

Its funny how so much of this talk within the java and linux community about ease of implementation, and simplicity is something MS has been working toward for years. Its only now as they encroach on the Enterprise, do we suddenly see the java/unix camp take such things seriously and then claim its this new innovative scope of focus.
