'Revolutionary' character overstated
The idea of a language running on a runtime with features that hid some of the OS internals that slow down development is not that revolutionary. SmallTalk, PowerBuilder, and even Visual Basic had already done much of the early groundwork in this area.

What Sun did differently, and what they have to get some credit for, is taking the time to carefully think out the architecture in advance, so that the language would not become self-cannabilizing as it advanced (as happened with Visual Basic, which started out too underpowered, and the later grafted on power too unwieldy.)

And then the marketing and evangelizing efforts were carefully tuned to the new platform's capabilities and advantages, so that developers could be quickly sold on what this could do for them.

The approach was revolutionary, and the cleanliness of the architecture was unprecedented. But the platform itself? Perhaps a bit less so.
