- Where does the information come from?

When you take a picture, you are capturing a set of information
(pixels). When you increase the resolution from 72 dpi to 600
dpi, you are adding information. Where does that extra
information come from? It comes from the computer making a
"best guess" as to what should go there.
It's not real information. I've spent a long time doing
microscopy, and for scientific publication, it's kind of dodgy to
be creating information that wasn't originally there.
As you say, you can make things look better, but in reality,
you're filling in blank spaces with new information chosen by an
