Great quote, but wrong interpretation
Quote's worth giving in full:

Then they came for the trade unionists, but I was not a trade unionist. And then they came for the Jews, but I was not a Jew - so I did little. Then when they came for me, there was no one left who could stand up for me."

One of the points of this statement is, if you do not stand up for the rights of those with whom you disagree or who have nothing in common with you, then they will not stand up for you.

Divide and conquer fails as a strategy only when the intended victims refuse to be divided.


The issue is not, did someone do something wrong(?). It is how to respond to an oppressive authority. The authority is presumed to be in the wrong.
