I agree that it is a scary situation, but that is exactly what is taking place today, as I type this. It is naive to think otherwise. As such, I do not expect to have any privacy with any type of electronic communication, be it email, telephone, cell phone, internet access, etc. I don't think the governemnt is spying on everyone, but it is naive to think that it would be impossible for them to spy on you without a warrant or your knowledge.

The patriot act really doesn't change anything about the way security is conducted in the U.S., it really only has an impact in regard to the legal system in that it makes admissable, many pieces of evidence that would otherwise be inadmissable sans the patriot act. The FBI and the NSA have always had the authority to search your home (with a warrant) in secret without telling you about it at all until after the fact.

In regard to the sharing of data, it wasn't permitted prior to the act, and is still not permitted in conditions of searches/wiretaps w/o warrants. If they have a warrant, they are free to share the data, but if they are conducting a search or taps w/o a warrant, they are barred from any type of disclosure outside of their own agency, and the patriot act did not change that. I guess it is their "check and balance" (albeit a week one).
