Surprise. We're not talking just about this regulation.
The freedom from unwarranted search and seizure is still there, UNLESS its defined under the Patriot act (which in turn defines it under the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act) (someone correct me if I'm wrong). Then the police can tap away all they want, no warrant needed-- for a limited time. Welcome to 2004. They can use those wiretaps in court and NOT even tell you where it came from.
Essentially it is how the crime is defined. If you are out to rob a bank, you're right, most rights are still in place.

If you are even remotely connected to a foreign individual who might even remotely be connected to a foreign power or terrorist, so long many rights. And have you ever played 6 degrees of Bacon. Almost everyone is connected to everyone else by at most 6 people.
Police can sneek into your house and look around (with a warrant), but not even tell you. You'll find out, much later, but is that what the USA was founded on.

Police can look at your emails, NO warrant needed (bet ya didn't know that)( just not on your computer in your house or office). And I'm not talking about intercepting it either. If the email is on a server, and your significant other sends a picture of themselves in a bathing suit. ANYONE at the server facility, that's anyone, can look at it on the mail server, no warrant needed.

Now I'm not saying it's all bad. I'm just saying that the system is ripe for abuse. Hell, it's being abused right now. Just not against you or me. Yet.
