You are only protected from "Unreasonable" Search and seizure, aka searches w/o a warrant. However, a law enforcement official can legally observe you via windows (plain view/open field clauses), etc, so long as they do not enter your home without a warrant or permission.

Furthermore, this only applies to evidence gathered and used in a court of law, meaning if a police officer gathers evidence from your house w/o a warrant, it isn't admissible in court, and is a violation of procedure, rather than a crime, so they can technically do it.

You also have to consider that the amendment was originally founded to protect PROPERTY, and was only later construed to mean privacy. Further construment has made it possible that governmental agencies have the power to violate the 4th amendment, so long as they do not share the information outside of their own agency (part of the whole FBI/CIA intelligence info problems) or use that information in a court of law, barring a warrant.
