Open Source....
OOXML is a horrific mess, with a massive spec. cobbled together in a hurry, that simply documents the mess that is a binary format patched and repatched over the years dumped to XML

It is not a good format, it is not a good start to a new format, it is simply a bad format badly documented and it is unlikely to ever be correctly implemented by anyone else but Mircosoft (and even they will change the spec in the next version of office and so will not match the standard....)

ODF is not (yet) a good standard either but it is a good basis for a new format, it is young and was started correctly as a new format designed to be flexible, extendable, and easy to implement, and is already (partly) implemented by several independent packages

(Note XHTML/CSS is a standard and no-one implements this correctly yet but it is still a good standard ...)

If the Open Source community produced a format like OOXML then yes the community would be up in arms if someone tried to get it implemented as a standard, because it is horrible....not who it was designed by ...

The biggest problem people had with the process was the fact that it was fast-tracked even though there was only one implementation of it in existence (and the *apparent* strong arm tactics by Micosoft)
